I am a general surgeon with advanced training in the diagnosis and treatment of severe, life-threatening injuries and critical illness. I have also been a surgical patient myself, and I know just how challenging and frightening the experience can be. I strive to be an excellent communicator to help empower patients by better understanding their own injuries or disease processes and the treatments that I recommend. I also work hard to assure patients and their families that the knowledge, experience, and other resources available to critically ill and injured patients at Duke Health are the best in the world, and that they will benefit from having a large team of dedicated providers caring for them around the clock. When I am not in the hospital or the lab, I am usually running on local trails, cooking outdoors, or expanding my vinyl collection.

Patients who are severely injured or ill are simultaneously at risk for both bleeding and clotting. I research the fundamentals of blood clotting (coagulation) in order to develop strategies to stop bleeding at sites of trauma while also preventing abnormal clotting away from tissue and vascular injuries. With a better understanding of normal coagulation, we may soon develop both (a) blood thinners (anticoagulants) that do not cause bleeding, and (b) blood clotting (procoagulant) molecules that can stop hemorrhage at sites of injury without causing abnormal, off-target clots.
